This satirical, tongue-in-cheek humorous first book in a trilogy is outlined in first person by the unreliable narration of Corax as he journeys and comments on the various events that happen to him. Readers who like Peter David, A. Lee Martinez, or the Guardians of the Galaxy movies will find this title right up their alley with similar tones, fantastical plots, and over-the-top characters.
Parker (The Folding Knife; Sharps) channels his alter ego Tom Holt to bring a full measure of snark to this novella. The Goddess's interactions with her family are laugh-out-loud funny as is the increasingly hapless Lord Archias, who soon prays that the Goddess will just leave him alone. Regrettably, this delightful book is currently only available as a $40 special edition hardcover.
Parker's skillful control of pacing, expert rendering of characters, and subtle sense of humor add depth and believability to this stand-alone fantasy that should appeal to fans of the quasi-Renaissance fantasies of Melissa Scott and Steven Brust.
History rewrites itself at every turn in this tale of an alchemist whose own base metal becomes, at last, pure gold. Despite its price, this novella is suitable for large libraries.
